Recalling Idaafa
We can give more information about a place by forming an idaafa, in which the second term provides the additional information. When we do this, we do not use alif-lam on the first term of the idaafa, but it often appears on the second or final term. For now, just recognize that these are idaafa structures.
Your vocabulary words that indicate position, like “in front of” and “behind” act as the first term of an idaafa. As a result, we typically make the second or final term of the idaafa definite, like in the following examples: المحل بجانب البيت ; البيت بجانب سوق الفواكه
