Activity 3: Quiz

Vocabulary List 1

Vocabulary List 2

Grammar Note: How to Say I Have/He Has, Etc.?

  1. The meaning of the English verb “to Have” is expressed in Arabic by using a preposition and a pronoun attached to it. The most commonly used prepositions to convey the meaning of “to have” are عند, لدى they both mean “at” in English. So, when you add the preposition ي as in عندي the literal meaning is “at me” and the conventional meaning “I have”.
  2. Note that the alif maqsura “ى” in the possessive ending لدى turns into a ي when you add to it any possessive ending. This will result in the having two ي when you add `’my/ي” therefore, it will be written with one ي and pronounced doubled, with a shadda شدة and a fatha فتحة
  3. The preposition ل means “for”. It also conveys the meaning of the verb “to have” when a possessive ending is added to it. Note that ل is pronounced with a fatha لَ except when you add ي
  4. Listen to the recording to clarify the pronunciation of عند – لدى – ل when possessive endings are added to them.
