Activity 4: Pronunciation – Hamza

Pronunciation Note

The hamza همزة is a consonant that is called, phonetically, the glottal stop. This is because in order to pronounce it, you need to stop the passage of the air then let it go abruptly.Since the hamza is a consonant, you will hear it accompanied by a vowel, a Damma ضمة or a fatHa فتحة or a kasra كسرة. Example of words, in this lesson, that contain the hamza همزة are:

1. In the beginning:

اِبن  – أَب – أُم – أَخ – أُخت

2. In the Middle:

وِئام – رؤى

3. At the end:

وفاء

4. The hamza همزة may also occur in one word in more than one position, as in the words:

آباء – أبناء
